He studied Indology at Tiibingen, Munich and Bonn, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1914 for his thesis Die Lehre von Karman in der Philosophic der Jainas. This work has already been translated into English in Bombay in the year 1942. He then taught Indology in Bonn, Berlin and Tiibingen till 1959.
